Basted, Quilted and Bound.....

If you recall, my family had an issue with this quilt being hung in our entry/great room.....

it was just too darn cheery!  But I have a large space that needs to be filled and I've always had a quilt hanging in that space...
So the Basket quilt in neutral colors, with lots of linen and muted tones seemed to be the Zen-like quilt they were hoping for....
It is finished....and basted....

This quilt was machine stitched with Aurifil 12wt ivory colored thread....random vertical lines first and then back through with several horizontal lines....

The binding is a French General stripe in grey and charcoal.....
the binding was hand stitched and the quilt washed.....and then....oops

A small area where I didn't catch the quilt top....darn!
All fixed now and a sleeve added to the back so it is ready to hang...

This one is small....about 1/3rd. the size of the Dresden.  But I will add some artwork on the wall with the Basket quilt....
I will let you know how the fam likes it!!!
Happy Monday!

  4. I love the Dresden quilt and think it would look great in a hallway but the basket one is also beautiful...maybe they could go turn and turn about - they might not notice the change ;o)

  11. I like cheery! But I also like the basket quilt. There's just something about basket quilts that always calls to me. The quilt lines you put in make it seem much more modern. I hope the fam loves it!

  15. Congrats on the finish. I'm finishing up a wall quilt as well and was wondering if you might share your process for making the hanging sleeve and rigging the whole thing up to hang...I'd appreciate the guidance!

  16. your dresden quilt is really my favorite quilt. still haven't made the one i was planning with the 'plates' across one row yet. i would LOVE having yours hanging in my hallway though. I do think the basket quilt is lovely, too! i am sure it will be approved by your family.

  17. Hi Elizabeth...I am answering here {couldn't locate your email} so I hope you find this :) I cut a strip 4" wide and just slightly shorter than the width of the quilt {maybe by an 1 1/2 inches}. Fold in the short ends to the wrong side and press {fold about 1/4 inch}. Then I fold the length of the strip wrong sides together and stitch a 1/4 inch seam the length of this strip. Now since your seam is on the outside of your sleeve....fold the sleeve so this seam will be centered on the back of the sleeve and press. You won't see the seam since it will be next to the quilt back. You could also stitch right sides together and turn inside out. Then I place the top of the sleeve along the bottom edge of the top binding and pin all along the length. I hand stitch the top and the bottom of the length of the sleeve. Make sure you don't stitch through all layers of the quilt. Let me know if that doesn't make any sense. Hope it helps :) Also...I use either a dowel or a cafe rod to hang the quilt.

  20. I love the understated elegance of this quilt - it has a vintage feel to it! I also love the little rebel red basket who looks like he just snuck in at the last minute to make a statement! Keep that beautiful Dresden - they'll leave home one day!

  21. Families are so critical...who could not ADORE that dresden in all its splendid cheeriness? I love it, but the baskets are sweet in a muted classic loveliness too.

  22. Maybe you'll find another wall - I like both quilts!

  23. Maybe you should just get rid of the dresden quilt. It will be a sacrifice but I would be willing to take that quilt off your family's hands ;)

That quilt is the reason I started learning to quilt. So I can make my own soon!!

  26. Oh Mary I'm with you on loving cheery but the new basket quilt is also divine! Can you hang the dresden back up when they are out - or do you have a new location for it - if not I have a blank wall....? Just trying to help!

  28. Thanks for the insight into the hanging sleeve, Mary. (So glad I remembered to check back to see if you responded!) I feel much more confident about getting my quilt up on the wall now. Thanks again!

  29. I think they are both great, very different but equally lovely. Hey, my husband wont let me have ANY quilts in our house, I am planning a rebellion though and designing a modern version for our spare bed that will just appear one day ;) Bethx
