Last week I blogged about my foray into glue basting hexies. Sorry purists....I think I am a convert. I do find stitch basting hexies relaxing...in a mindless repetitive way.
But the speed and convenience of glue basting is winning out at the moment!
I am working with 1 inch hexies....
and my goal is to grow this to a piece large enough to provide me with a front and back exterior for a tablet cover.
My only real concern with the glue basting was having to tug at the papers to remove them.
But I have gotten some great tips so far...
such as:
press the piece before you attempt to remove the papers and some of you suggest starching and pressing before removing...
use a paper punch and punch a hole in the middle of the paper so you can 'fish' out the paper with a blunt object like a chop stick...
or using a sharp object, like a stiletto, to loosen up the edges...
and also, one I am terribly guilty of violating, use only a dab of the glue to baste!
All great tips! Please keep them coming!
happy tuesday!

I'm glad to see these tips, Mary, as I'm just about to dive into glue basting for the first time myself. I think the "just a dab" tip will be ringing in my ears when I begin ; )

ReplyDeleteAlways happy to see new tips about glue basting. Thanks for sharing & it's looking just lovely!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Kamie! I find it a great project to work on while watching a little televsion in the evening.
DeleteI find it just as quick to stitch them just at the corners (not through the papers), then I don't have to worry about getting them out as they peel out easily (even easier with a hole in the middle of the paper). They are looking gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI'm a convert too though have to say I would still hand baste the normal way for making a quilt as I've found the glue basting doesn't hold for that long. Perfect for smaller projects though :)
ReplyDeleteI love basting hexies, too. I find it relaxing and meditative...hugs your project looks great Julierose
ReplyDeleteI resisted glue basting for the longest time, but have become a convert also. I do think it has it's place and time, though. Projects that are going to sit around for a while I don't quite trust to the glue.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I would have tried hexies without glue basting being invented ... now they are one of my favrourite things to do :)
ReplyDeleteThe glue basting makes them pretty painless!
DeleteLove your hexies, I am a hexie addict. Been trying glue basting, still not 100% convinced, maybe more timely, but, I enjoy the relaxing motion of basting. But will keep on trying the glue baste method.
ReplyDeleteYou are making seriously adorable progress! Not a hexie girl here, but I have ample admiration for others' hexies :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful hexies ! I am a glue convert too. I thread basted for years. I just run the back of my needle under the fold and the paper comes right out ; )
ReplyDeleteI haven't worked with hexies yet, mainly because I don't want to baste them around the paper. thanks for the glue review.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tips and the eye candy, Mary!
ReplyDeleteYour little hexie project looks lovely. I still haven't made any but the glue sounds like a good thing to try when/if I do.
ReplyDeleteI think the thing I am most nervous about when it comes to the glue is getting the paper off after and having both paper and fabric unharmed. Keep telling me it will be all right. One day I might be brave enough to believe you!
ReplyDeleteI do so love your happy little hexies.
